He has trained in various traditional styles of Kung Fu, such as the Shaolin Five Animals, Shaolin Tongbeiquan, and Shaolin Staff, following his Shaolin Master Shi Yong Po [Chin.: Shì yǒng pō 释永坡 | 1926 - 2018] and Master Zhu Zhan Di [Chin.: zhū zhāngdí 朱璋迪 | 1898 – 1982]. He has also studied Buddhist philosophy and meditation, with Master Shi Hai fa [Chin.: shì hǎi fǎ 释海法 | 1921 - 1997] of White Horse Temple in Luoyang; and study medical qigong under Shaolin Master Shi Yong Hai [Chin.: shìyǒnghǎi 释永海 | 1952 - /].

One of the unique features of Master Shi Yan Zhuo's teachings is his emphasis on the spiritual aspect of martial arts.
